The Flapper

Welcome to the world of a 1920s woman! What was she doing and what
were her interests? And most importantly for the fashionistas, what
did she wear?
The “Roaring twenties” are often associated with the glamour and
permissiveness and as F. Scott Fitzgerald describes in his “Great
Gatsby”, the decade between the two world wars seemed to be one big
party. Old morals and standards were abolished and the most obvious
change in society was surely the role of women. The modern woman was
called a “flapper”, who was emancipated and had the freedom to do
anything men could do.

Besides political and economical changes for the women like the right
to vote and attending colleges, the 1920s brought along many
changes in fashion. To achieve the new ideal of a boyish,
flat-chested appearance, women wore straight dresses, bound their
breasts, showed their knees, dyed and bobbed their hair, used heavy
make-up for red lips and dark eyes, engaged in extreme dieting and
smoked in public. Due to their appearance and behaviour, the women of
the 20s were regarded as saucy and flirty and thus earned their
nickname “flapper”.
